Editorial #2: WOMEN ARE GAINING GROUND IN FAMILY DECISION MAKING
QUESTION: A SURVEY DONE BY THE PEW RESEARCH CENTER SUGGESTS THAT COUPLES ARE SHARING FAMILY DECISION-MAKING MUCH MORE THAN THEY DID BACK IN THE 50'S AND 60'S. EVEN IN MATTERS AS CONTROLLING THE TELEVISION REMOTE, WOMEN ARE PLAYING A MUCH LARGER ROLE. IS THIS A SIGN THAT OUR SOCIETY IS BECOMING MORE EVOLVED?

ANSWER: There is in marriage-partnerships-family, a need to survive as a unit. This is especially so in the families that exist in the current times. Issues of economics, child rearing, and lessened community support, are issues that have been deteriorating since the turn of the century of 1900 AD. A family unit must look more and more to itself for what it needs.
In the past, the clearly defined roles, of males and females, were a circumstance of women not having the power to contract for jobs which would support them and their families.
The need to have "female responsibilities met", ie., child bearing, childrearing, household duties to maintain a healthy family, while she was working outside of the household, economically did not work out. Her limited success, because of job opportunity limitations, did not allow a marginal profit. No additional monies went to the household because of the need to replace her services. And with limited salaries and opportunities, she could not contribute to the family in a monetary way.
With the changes in the roles of women in the market place, and higher salaries which accompany these changes, women are now capable of adding to the family household with "true financial substance". In other words, there is a marginal profit for her entry into the business world. Salaries are high enough, for her work, and opportunities are present that allow her to replace her family duties, and have money left over.
With this shift, women now have "true survival value" for family needs. Where, money/income has always given a foundation for "who is powerful", there is a shift, now, of this power foundation to the female, as well as, the male.
It is no longer true that, the women of these families are the lower income earners in the household. This fact is also a cause for the power shift currently being observed, ie., the television channel changer!
In these times, culturally and economically, this shift in parity, is going to cause huge changes in society. As women become more and more involved, as participants in the "American Dream", they are going to find that power situations, they have been barred from in the past, simply will not exist.
You may look forward to the following shifts that are right around the corner:
1. There will be less attention paid to roles of any kind.
2. The confidence of being able to predict what one will think and do, according to male/female roles and actions, will slip away. And, limitations of sexual perspectives, will change to a more unified role.
3. Children, will not look to the female in the household, for the primary nurturing. Both adults will be seen as primary.
4. "Job roles" will have absolutely no bias in the business community.
5. There are many more of these shifts coming. What do you see?
