QUESTION: On July 7th, European Union legislators proposed to scale back their goal to use more biofuels. They claim that biofuels are contributing to deforestation and higher food prices.
WHAT IS THE LIKELY FUTURE OF BIOFUELS IN THE UNITED STATES?
(See the July 7, 2008 "NEW YORK TIMES" newS article link below)
ANSWER: The development of biofuels, as an answer to the current fuel crisis, is not a well conceived idea. This answer can cause alot of harm to the economy, Mother Earth's environment and world food sources.
There are those who believe that new fuels must come from crops, to make a difference in the current fuel shortages worldwide. This plan would cause problems related to: huge use of water for production of biofuels; use of prime crop land currently being used for food production; the pollution of burning these products that is as great and sometimes, greater than the use of fossil fuels. And, last but not least, there is no way to predict continuation of the production of these fuels. Food shortages, in the future, will require the land be designated, once more, for food production.
A biofuel program, based on using food supplies, is not a good long term, answer. To look at a future, where current energy concerns have been solved, is to go in the direction of sun and wind power. Sun and wind are renewable resources. These are in plenty and to use these resources is not a difficulty. Any other way that is used in solving the problem of energy shortage, will unbalance Mother Earth and put her citizens at risk.
Go in Peace and Love.
